Having a cough is not always a bad thing...it's the source behind the cough that can be bad. Coughing is actually quite good because it can bring up phlegm which is the airways response to irritation and movement within the lungs (Long story but it helps with your lungs natural desire to move air in and out). When the airways get irritated they like to produce an abundant amount of the stuff.

If you're coughing up stuff that's any other color but white or clear you may want to get yourself to the doctor....If you're coughing up any color for more than a week and nothing seems to help with the phlegm production I would seek out the advice of your doctor.

Alot of people tend to stick to decongestants that can be purchased over the counter to "thin" the phlegm out. If you're trying to get a good night's rest talk to your doctor about possibly taking cough suppressent.

Otherwise a humidifier, steamy shower, or warm tea could help.

Before taking any over the counter medication I would definately consult with your physician about which medicine is right for you because alot of the ones can cause interference with other medications or hurt already failing organs.

I find that inhaling steam really helps. Put your head over a bowl of hot water and cover your head with a towel letting it drape around the bowl to keep the steam in.

Inhale slowly and deeply. At first, this may make you cough a bit more, but stay with it. Do it for as long as you can.

This can provide good relief.

Remember if you have had a cough that doesn't seem to be clearing up after around 10 days you really need to see a doctor.

Poor thing...try 'cough'. Lozenges or syrup suppressant...but go to a doctor first; hope it ain't tuberculosis.
