Only diet and exercise. Drugs do not correct the problem, which is too much insulin. Insulin is not just a glucose lowering hormone, it also signals the body to turn glucose into fat for later use and it also allows the storage of fat. When you consider that type 2 diabetes patients continuously have too much insulin circulating in their system it's no wonder it's hard to lose weight...and very easy to gain! Medications do no inhibit insulin production, they do things like make the cells more receptive to it, or cause your pancreas to make MORE insulin, maybe cause slower digestion to slow the rise in glucose levels, but they don't stop the over production of insulin that ultimately causes insulin resistance and diabetes. A healthy diet, that consists primarily of foods that resemble what they are...like an apple instead of applesauce or apple juice...helps lower the insulin response and exercise sensitizes cells to the insulin produced. These are the only treatments that come without side effects, including weight gain. Sorry...not trying to be condescending, it's just the truth.

I hated Avandia for that reason-gained 30 lbs. Switched to Byetta and lost the weight. But I;ll warn ya, I was nauseous for two weeks! Some people can't get through that...It is an injection, I started w/5mgs 4xs a day worked up to 10mgs 2xs and I take metformin too. type II diabetes. Gotta carry snacks as it will crash me fast if I forget to eat.

From what our MD tells us there is none currently. The new med Januvia is it, but was just OK by the FDA today and is very expensive. He's on Byetta and that works great he was losing weight then the avandia put it right back on. its was weird.! Our MD suggested a basil insulin at night, but as of today that just makes my husband so tired (even more than before). So when you find one let me know......
