Is it because the body cannot break down the sugar and use it for energy, but I'm confused because wouldn't that mean it gets stored then and not burned up... I always thought diabetes would cause you to gain weight. Please, somebody, explain!

there different types of diabetes. the two most common are type 1 which is an autoimmune disease where the bodies own immune system to attack it's insulin producing cells. The most most common, which accounts for 90-95% of all types is Type 2. It's caused by insulin resistance. Although they share the name diabetes they are two very different types. The common thing is glucose trapped in the blood. Weight loss is usually associated with type 1. Insulin is usually thought of as a glucose lowering hormone but it also is a fat storage hormone. If there's no insulin, there's no fat storage, so it's impossible for a type 1 who is not producing insulin to gain weight. Add to that that without insulin they're not able to use glucose, the bodies preferred fuel. Because cells are starving with no insulin to let glucose in, the body begins breaking down fat and muscle in an attempt to feed the cells. Obviously this causes weight loss. In type 2 people are making plenty of insulin their bodies are just insulin resistant. In this type weight GAIN is common because of all the extra insulin circulating. Again, insulin is also a fat storage hormone. It also signals the body to turn excess glucose, which would be excess calories, into fat for future use. A type 2 can be SO insulin resistant that they lose some weight when the pancreas is no longer able to produce enough insulin to over come the resistance, but it's not usually pronounced, unlike in type 1 where they can lose a LOT of weight in a very short amount of time.
