I am looking for some things to plant/grow. I jsut remembered I are a tomato looking fruit which had a unique taste and a very bitter skin/peel. It was orange I think but looked very similar to a tomato. You know what it is?

I don't think you're talking persimmon.its possible.the tree gets good sized.the old-timers used them to forecast weather, try cutting one open it will have a good sized seed.open the seed,it'll appear to have either a spoon or a fork impression inside it.really!can't remember which sign meant what but, someone here proably does.anyway it'll tell you if its persim.or not.
i have seen pomegante fruit look like you say,the skin is really bittersweet but the meat of it is good and very good for you.

Persimons grow on trees, which get quite large.
