Hi! I am a Registered Nurse in Colorado with some background in cardiac medicine.
I will do my best to answer your question.
The heart has 4 chambers each divided by valves. These valves open and close at precise intervals so that the heart can shoot blood out to the body to keep you alive. A heart murmer is when one of these valves can be weak, or rigid. They call this a murmer because when a doctor listens to the chest there is this Lub SHHHH Dub sound. when it should just be LUB DUB.
The pain could come from several sources and yes it could be cardiac related. If he is already pre-disposed to a murmer my advice would be to consult a cardiologist about the chest pain. There could be a million reasons other than his heart that his pain is there and it could have nothing to do with the murmer. Many people have murmers and live normal healthy lives. My advice is to go to the doctor and ask for a 12 lead EKG reading, as well as serial cardiac enzymes by a blood draw. This will help the doctor determine if there is any cardiac damage.
I hope this helps
Craig RN 26 Colorado.

Chances are pretty good that, because he has a murmur, the Doc just wants a complete work up to cover the territory. LOTS of people have murmurs and never know it until something happens later in life and they get the workup.
There are a million reasons for chest pain, including:
-cardiac causes, which would show up when there is some extra load on the heart (eating, emotions, exercise)
-respiratory causes, such as damage from smoking, lung infection, cold air burn
-muskuloskeletal causes, such as out-of-alignment thoracic vertebra (intercostal neuralgia), rib dislocation
gastro-intestinal causes: acid reflux
-emotional causes (broken heart....)
Ask him to think about going to the Doc for the chest pain and then answer these 4 questions in his head, as you read them out to him:
-What would happen if you did?
-What would happen if you didn't?
-What would not happen if you did?
-What would not happen if you didn't?
When he looks confused, immediately ask him to go with you "right now" and avoid any other discussion. He will or he won't. Remember he's old enough to vote.......
BTW, about 5% of the people I see in my ambulance would have no one paying any attention to them at all if they weren't sick......

many people have heart murmurs and they are not necessarily fatal. If your boyfriend is having chest pains, something else is going on. He could have progressed from prolapse, to regurgitation, he could have an infection in his heart due to the regurgitation. The tests they will put him through are NOT traumatic - echocardiogram, stress test, EKGs, chest x-rays... no big deal. They may find the cause of this and be able to help him.
IF HE HAS AN INFECTION IN HIS HEART, ANTIBIOTICS CAN HELP - without them, this could be fatal. If it is something else, they will be able to treat him and relieve him of his pains and he can live a long normal life. He needs to get over his EGO and go to the doctor and deal with this.
TALK TO HIS PARENTS ABOUT THIS, he may need more than just YOU to talk some sense into him.

If he refuses to go there is nothing that you can do. The law prohibits you from forcing him to go. He is over 18 and you are not married.
There is also no way that we can tell what is wrong with him except that he is being foolish by not going to get the test done.
I would really reconsider even being with him in the future as he sounds way to stubborn and foolish to me. If he doesn't take care of himself how could he be worried about you?
Sorry

Bring him gently to the Doctor, exactly,he will do the Electro cardiogram, after that, the study of the P,QRS and T waves will have the proof to diagnose precisely his angina. He need not to work so hard, have more rest, but spending the time for reading is beneficial.Other Medical checks is a must.

If it is getting worst you better get him to a doctor and I mean it. Your boyfriend may be on a point of a heart attack. My hubby had same problems several years ago and he had a mild heart attack. 99 % of his heart was block and they had to do some procedure to get it unstopped so please get him either to the hospital or the doctor. He too young to be having such problems but it would be a good ideal to have him check out. I will pray for him and you. suzie

Since he's 22, there isn't much you can do until he decides to help himself. He would help himself far better by getting that appointment, unless he's really in a hurry to have a fatal heart attack.

he needs to see a cardiologist (heart doctor)! at the very least, he needs to be seen immediately by his family doctor, and then referred to a cardiologist. if he has already been diagnosed with a murmur, he probably already has a cardiologist?
it is not uncommon for heart patients to not want to go to the doctor...it's scary to think about what might be wrong...be patient, but firm!
