It's animal! The undeveloped young of a bird or reptile. Most definitely ANIMAL. If your son is writing a poem about whether an egg is a fruit or vegetable I suggest he takes up some other hobby without sharp implements.

They're an animal product. Part of the meat and dairy group on the food pyramid. Definitely not a fruit or a vegetable.

An egg is not a fruit or a vegetable, it is biologically mostly protein with the potential to be fertilized to become a living animal. Fruits and vegetables have seeds and are able to regenerate through seeds and pollination.

I'm not usually one to be rude, but why do you people keep saying an egg is a dairy product? THESE are dairy products: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dairy including milk, yogurts, cheeses, and dairy whey.
A chicken egg is a chicken embryo. It's essentially a baby chicken, and therefore is a protein. Just because eggs and milk are usually in the same case at the market has nothing to do with nutritional category.
