I know someone who had sexual intercouse w/a person who had HPV (before this person knew they had the virus) but somehow didn't contract the virus themselves. Is it possible that they could just be a carrier of the virus? If so, how long could they carry this virus?

It's possible they just never contracted the virus. Just because a person has sex with someone (protected or not) with someone who has an STD, don't mean they will get it.

You can have the virus and never show any signs of it. Most people have no signs or symptoms of HPV and are unaware they have the virus. Warts are the only noticeable physical sign of HPV. There are over 100 different kinds of HPV and only about a dozen actually cause warts. So, just because a person has the virus doesn't mean they have a kind that causes warts. Many people go years without realizing they have the virus.

And, just because the person wasn't properly diagnosed by a doctor, doesn't mean they don't have the virus. There are no carriers of HPV, you either have it or you don't. It's possible, like I said before, to have the virus and just not have any signs or symptoms of it.

More than likely your friend is a carrier of the virus now. For most, there are no symptoms of HPV. Once you have it, you have it for life. Also HPV is so easily contacted, you can get it without having intercourse. Just plain and simple naked (genital) contact can pass HPV. Your friend (if it is a girl) will need to be very dedicated to getting annual pap exam's. If your friend is a guy, HPV does not effect them at all (unless when they contacted it they also got warts, but if not, HPV does nothing to men).

Lots of people have HPV and don't know it. It is actually not as easily spread to others as your more common STD's are.
