The Pink Lady apple was the result of the Western Australia Department of Agriculture's apple breeding programme. Researchers crossed the Golden Delicious and Lady Williams varieties in the early 1980s to create this vibrantly pink apple. Because of its lovely pink colour and the fact that one of its parents was named "Lady", it was a natural choice of name. The apple's varietal name is in fact Cripps Pink Cultivar. The Pink Lady was released in Australia in 1989, and is one of the few apples whose name is trademarked, the trademark being owned by the Australian Apple and Pear Growers Association.
