Just get another table and some folding chairs. I;m sure if you can't afford them someone you know may have them and they can let you borrow them. Or just buy them then return them for your money back.

I was just over at a dinner this past weekend and there weren't enough seats for the guests so the host set out a table with folding chairs which she brought in fron the back deck/patio. It was perfect. But really, if you don't have any extra chairs or table, I don't see why sitting on the couch would be rude at all. In fact, it'll probably be a little more laid back and relaxing for the guests to chat and mingle while they eat.

I'm in this situation most times that I have guests, as my table seats four, and I have three kids, two adults in my family alone.
My standard rule is to seat all children at the table where the mess can be easily contained, and adults in the living room, utilizing whatever small tables or ottomans are handy to rest plates and beverages on. Nobody has ever considered it rude, especially as my husband and I are sitting right there with them, and we are usually on the floor, leaving the chairs and sofa for the guests. :)

Oh no way, I do it all the time. Even when I only have 2 people over and they do fit on the table. If it's something easy then we just sit on the couch. And they will understand that there isnt enough room. Enjoy your dinner!

Do you have a coffee table or any stack tray tables they could put in front of them to eat off of? If not, you can usually buy an expensive set of four tray tables, that fold up, on sale at K-Mart and other stores like that.
I don't think it would be rude, and if they are your friends, they will understand. Most people are just happy to get something to eat, and will eat anywhere. Good luck!

It's not rude at all. We do it and so does the rest of the family. One thing that we did just this last thanksgiving was rent a table and chairs. Just look up party rental place's in the yellow pages and call around. It's really cheap. Good luck!

Go buy a card table and place it next to your DR table. You can't make people sit on the couch. If you cant fit everyone at the table, cancel the dinner.

If you have no choice but to use the couch then I would suggest sitting people who would not mind, I don't know who you are expecting but I'm suggesting, children, partner, brother/sister, and use the table for the respected generation/visitors.

I don't think its rude at all. You don't have enough room. I have had to do that at my house and have done it at others houses. And my experience is most people don't really care. And theres always some that prefer to eat on the couch anyways, they're used to it. They're at your house for your company. And if they can't understand that you don't have the room and are gonna complain about it then i say screw them.
