My mother was complaining of chest pain, loss of energy and breathlessness for several months. How can you tell the difference between ingestion and the general ageing process and heart attack symptoms? She was being more and more inhalers for breathlessness while I believe congestive heart failure was not being investigated throughly enough. Any thoughts on this?

Was Critical Care Paramedic for 6 years. We looked at 3 things in the er. The first was the description of the pain. We looked for crushing pain. Not pain that varied with breathing. The pain could be in the jaw, chest, left arm and especially in women, indigestion pain. The second was a 12 lead ekg. This looks at the electrical signal that tells the muscle to beat. We know the normal pathway of the signal. We are looking for variances from the norm. And last we draw cardiac enzymes. The heart muscle is different than all other muscle in the body. When the heart is being damaged, it puts out enzymes detectable in the blood. These can be troponin, of ckmb. If two of three are present, we send them for a Cath. That involves shooting dye from an iv in the thigh and taking fast xrays to look for damage. Treadmills are that, we just take 12 lead ekgs while getting a persons heart rate up. Hope this helps

I had those symptoms, it was hypertension (Hight blood pressure). It was giving me all sorts of problems. Maybe a medication review if she already has hypertension would be a good idea, or a check on her BP over a few weeks.

You should take her condition very seriously and take her to see a different doctor if you're not happy with the one you have now. Your gut feeling is usually right.

I'm not a doctor, but I suspect that if you had a heart attack, you'd know it. I suspect it hurts like a mofo. Also, doesn't it start in your chest and radiate to your arms?
