French cuisine is very varied. Depends where you're going. Jews, Muslims and vegetarians should avoid quiche Lorraine (cheese tart) since it has bacon in it. In the south try bouillabaisse (fish and seafood stew). Coq au vin (a chicken stew) is good. Ordering a steak is a problem for the squeamish. If you normally order your steak rare (saignant) in France it will have been shown the oven and then immediately put on the plate, it could be still frozen in the centre. Personally I love it, but it's not everyman's dish. If you really don't know what to order, try le rosbif, although this might also be a bit bloody for the average Brit. Bon appetit!

Ask the garcon (waiter) what he recommends. The french do marvellous things with poultry, often with fruit, and their omelettes are unsurpassed. Why don't you borrow a French Cookbook from the library before you go? Anything by Jehanne Benoit will give you good guidance. IT all depends on your tastes - if you hate fish, don't go for fish!

It is hard to have a bad meal in France. Please send me a doggy bag!

coq au van is a favorite of mine also any poor food, escargot, REAL foisgras. crusty bread and stinky cheese. Also do not go to a popular restaurant try a local brasserie for authentic food. Its a bar with good hearty French food and DEFIANTLY get a crouqe monsuire... the traditional toasted ham and cheese sandwich with local pork and real cheese served toasted and warm try it with a local red you ll never have a ham and cheese again in America or try it open faced with an poached or fried egg "crouqe madam!"
