Gum was made long ago when people got bored and they felt like eating something, but they didn't want to go obese, so they just chewed on something. This is also the reason chewing tobacco and snuff was made, but since the kids couldn't have those, they made gum. It became popular for parents because their children always wanted something to eat, and more-so, something sweet, so they wanted something easy and cheap to satisfy the kids and they wouldn't have to worry about it.
