To control asthma properly you need a good preventer, and the carry the ventolin with you at all times.

Seretide is particularly good for asthma. Other preventers are;
Flixotide Accuhaler/Flovent Diskus, Pulmicort Turbuhaler, Seretide Accuhaler/Advair Diskus, Singulair.

Relievers are; Serevent Accuhaler/Serevent Diskus, Serevent Inhaler, Ventolin Inhaler, Volmax

I have asthma and use seretide, and have found that my asthma is much better except when we have hot windy days, that will set off a asthma attack.

ah... Advair :)

If you can afford it, advair is absolutely amazing. Be sure to take it once per day, and enjoy the sensations of breathing!

I've been dealing with asthma as a patient for twenty five years. Still dealing with it as we speak. I've tried most of the drugs out there and have been to many of the local hospitals, sometimes impatient. There isn't a day that goes by where I don't have an attack of some kind.

In terms of drugs, I honestly can tell you that advair is a hard one to beat. I've tried theophylline, alupent, prednisone, epinepherine, albuterol, atrovent, combuvent, intal, flovent, serevent, singulair, and of course, advair. Some are better than others.

I was skeptical with adviar. its a combination of flonaise, a corticosteroid (not the anabolic weight lifting genital shrinking stuff) and serevent, a beta antaonist stimulant. I've tried both, sometimes both at once. But it works wonders with advair.

At least in the united states, not all insurance plans will cover for advair, at least not without trying other drug formularies, and that would be the reason i'm not on it this moment. Its a little pricy. But i seldom had an attack on it.

Right now, an epinepherine inhaler, a hot black cup of coffee, and some prednisone usually gets me through fine.

Anyways, if you have asthma, its important to learn about it. Its not all the same. Find out what triggers you, for example, weather changes, too much exercise, certain foods, allergies, stress, and find out what works best.

BTW, DO NOT rely on your physician for all your information. They know lots of stuff, but only know so much at the end of a day. There are some that have put me on drugs that were recalled. Does wonders for the doctor-patient relationship. Besides, they can only see you for a few minutes a month. Do your best to know yourself best.

Get a peak flow meter. Use it daily, that way you know how well you are breathing. On bad days, I score a 300.
On great days, 750.

And if you are ever in a pinch, a hot black cup of coffee works quite well.

Hope this helps.

Seretide (it contains two medicines - Salmeterol & Fluticasone) is given as a preventer for asthma. It works to reduce inflammation in your airways and should (hopefully) prevent you having another serious asthma attack. It needs to be taken every day in order to keep doing this.
This is different to Ventolin (salbutamol), which provides relief from the immediate effects of asthma (shortness of breath, wheezing etc) but does nothing to prevent it in the long term. Asthma is very common in Australia but it is very important to make sure it's well controlled. Take the Seretide every day as directed and see your doctor regularily or if you are using more Ventolin than normal.
