Indonesia, and it's easy to make. Mix peanut butter, water, milk, sugar, soy sauce and something hot, like Saambal Oolek; Cook it for just a short time and it will thicken. You can adjust the amount of the ingredients as you go along until you get the right taste and thickness. There are other recipes but this is the easiest I now of, and it is good.

Hmmm.. in Singapore, the malays seems to be the one selling satay, i would assume the peanut gravy/satay sauce was discovered by the malays. Correct me if im wrong :) either way, i still love the sauce! :)

Satay sauce originates in East/Southeast Asia. It is a sauce based in peanut butter, coconut milk and other flavors. It is also a normal fare on french fries in the Netherlands.
Here is a recipe:
/4 cup vegetable oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 onion, chopped
1/2 to 1 teaspoon ground dried red chile peppers 3 kaffir lime leaves 1/2 teaspoon curry powder
1 tablespoon chopped fresh lemongrass 1 cup coconut milk 1/2 cup milk
1 2-inch cinnamon stick 3 bay leaves 2 teaspoons tamarind paste
1 to 3 tablespoons fish sauce 3 tablespoons dark brown sugar 3 tablespoons lemon juice
1 cup chunky peanut butter
Heat oil in skillet to medium-high heat and saute garlic, onion, chile peppers, kaffir lime leaves, curry powder and lemongrass for 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in coconut milk, milk, cinnamon stick, bay leaves, tamarind paste, fish sauce, brown sugar, lemon juice and peanut butter; mix well. Reduce heat and cook, stirring frequently, until sauce thickens, about 30 minutes. Be very careful sauce does not stick to bottom of pan.

Love chicken satay!!! I have made it using a few different recipes and always used the yellow curry. It just never comes out as great as it does when I go out and eat it. Good luck!!
