A Manhatten--Timeless and always great!
3/4 oz sweet vermouth
2 1/2 oz bourbon whiskey
1 dash Angostura® bitters
1 maraschino cherry
1 twist orange peel [or lime--I like lime better]
Combine the vermouth, bourbon whiskey, and bitters with 2 - 3 ice cubes in a mixing glass. Stir gently, don't bruise the spirits and cloud the drink. Place the cherry in a chilled cocktail glass and strain the whiskey mixture over the cherry. Rub the cut edge of the orange peel over the rim of the glass and twist it over the drink to release the oils but don't drop it in.

The best cocktail ever? No contest. It's the Martini. No, I don't mean all those girlie drinks served in a martini glass and I most certainly DO NOT mean drinks containing vodka which are served in a martini glass. I mean the classic Martini made with gin and vermouth.
Here's how I do it: for each drink put 3.5 oz of a premium gin into a metal cocktail shaker. Add a tiny spash of dry vermouth and a handful ice big ice cubes, not crushed or shaved ice. Shake the shaker until it feels really cold on your hands and strain into a chilled martini glass. I prefer to see two queen-sized olives in the glass but some like smaller olives or onions, (onions make it a Gibson, that's OK).
Lately in my house we have been using stainless steel martini glasses. They don't change the flavour of the drink and if you're doing the wash-up after a couple of these drinks, metal is safer than glass.
Tangueray is the gin-of-choice in my home but Bombay is good too. For an interesting change, Hendrick's Scottish gin is good. You serve that drink with a slice of cucumber instead of olive.

Margarita. Not the slush puppy type. It's got to be the original(on the rocks). mmmm yummy. I don't know any sites, but there is a great cocktail book out by playboy(you also get a great little starter kit to go with it inc:shaker, glass& decorations).

The best cocktail for me is, in equal measures, beer and beer! It makes a beer cocktail! If you're not as adventurous as me, you could try the same recipe but use lager instead of beer - you still get a kick, but none of the flavour!

My cousin, Alison, who is 9 years old, thinks a J20 is the best cocktail. Apparently, a J20 is like apple and watermelon, for example. She thinks it is the best cocktail because she likes it.
I have slightly different ideas although I'm sure a J20 is not without its charm.

For me it is still the ever famous martini ...not straight up but on the rocks. Fill cocktail glass with Vodka add 1 tsp olive juice and six olives and enjoy! (you don't even have to wave the vermouth bottle over the glass.)

Sex on the beach in a highball glass. Peach schnapps, cranberry and pineapple juices, and vodka. Some recipes replace pineapple juice with grapefruit, or orange juice, and some add grenadine syrup to fancy it up, but I like it simple. Garnish with a maraschino cherry or a thin slice of lemon.
