An endocrinologist. BUT, be sure the endocrinologist is fully aware of the differences between a Type I and Type II. Because 95% of diabetics are Type IIs many endocrinologists fall into the pattern of thinking that what works for Type IIs works for Type Is. Well, THAT IS WRONG.

Ask any endocrinologist what their experience in treating Type Is is and what their methodology is in treating Type Is vs. Type IIs.

Also, if the Type I you are asking about is still a child, then try to find a pediatric endocrinologist.

I'm going to join the crowd here and say that an endocrinologist (and even within endocrinology, there are those who specialize in diabetes) will best be able to help you. Many internists also manage diabetes, but for type I, there are some options which an internist is unlikely to be comfortable with, such an an insulin pump, that an endocrinologist is much more likely to be able to consider and use if appropriate.

Seriously, I would go to one that has a track record of understanding and treating diabetes. What part of the symptoms are you concerned about? You should be seen by a team at some point where there is an endocrinologist, podiatrist and ophthalmologist to see how things are going. If you are having complications regarding feet, go to a podiatrist. If it is eyes, go to an ophthalmologist etc.
