My parents, aged 69 and 63, have never eaten meat, fish or eggs - ever. I've been vegetarian for 22 years, my siblings are too, and my brother is 6foot tall and strong. Get yourself a good vegetarian cookbook, check out vegetarian websites such as www.vegsoc.org and you may also need to take supplements such as Vitamin B6, iron and a multivitamin. You need a balanced diet with lots of fresh veg and fruit, not too much processed foods. Good luck!

Something like 80% of the families in India eat NO meat, ever, and that has been the case for centuries.

I have been vegetarian since 1979 and wouldn't consider ever eating meat again for any reason. I do eat dairy and once in a while an egg, so I get lots of iron, B12, and protein. If you eat dairy and a variety of grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables, then you really don't have to be concerned about all the things that non-vegetarians want you to worry about. If you don't eat dairy, then you have to be a little careful, but it's still not rocket science. The main thing is to eat lots of good food, not fill up on sugary and starchy foods.

To have a healthy vegetarian diet, you must get enough protein, such as beans and peas. One nutrient that is not found in plants is Vitamin B12. It is found in dairy and eggs however. If you do not eat dairy or eggs, you need to take a Vitamin B12 supplement. B12 deficiency may not show up for a long time after becoming a vegetarian, because the amount needed is small and the body often stores it. It can cause serious nerve damage in time, however.
Haven't you got a book on this yet?

Absolutely! I haven't eat meat for 18 years. And I'm healthy. You need to eat a balanced diet with lots of vegetables, protiens (cheese, tofu, lentils, nuts, beans - chick peas, butter beats, borlotti, harricot, etc, eggs). There are lots of websites that will give you information, there should be no need to take supplements if you eat the right foods.

It is very possible as long as you are getting the correct vitamins and nutrients from other sources. Protein is a must, Tofu and peanut butter are great sources!
