I have been having cardiac symptoms for almost a year, onsets of tachycardia which cause lightheadedness, weakness and shortness of breath. My cardiologist wants me to have a cardiac ablation done, and I was wondering if anyone knows the average cost of one. I found some figures to be $10,000-$15,000. I have insurance which pays the majority, but want to know how much I'd have to cover on my own.

I had a radiofrequency ablation on October 11, 2005. Yahoo! Its been a year! Oh well, the whole procedure not including the physician who did it cost a grand total of a little over $27,000.00
and my insurance company, Personal Care, negotiated the bill down a lot. The part I paid for the doctor was $30.00. I pay $75.00 a month for 12 months as my part of the bill.
Also, to let you know, I had AV node re-entrant tachycardia for years. I didnt want to be a guinea pig for a procedure which had not been perfected. When it first started, it wasnt bad, I would flip into a heart rate of 240 in 1 beat. The electrophsiologist who did it said its sort of like flipping a light on. I compare it to getting the throttle stuck in you Ford Pinto on the clover leaf on the interstate. I am a RN in a hospital, so that may be hard for you to understand. It has to do with the anatomy of what is going on when your heart starts going crazy.
It got so bad that I was flipping into AV node re entry and having to get doses of Adenocard which stops your heart for a couple seconds. It freaked me out, so I knew I had to do something. I was willing to mortgage my home to get fixed.
Hope you consider doing it. It will be the best money you ever spent in your life and you will have the security to know you wont have erratic heart beats, lightheadedness and shortness of breath anymore. My procedure was less than 30 minutes. Sometimes I heard it can take hours. The doctor who did it for me is known around the world for ablations.
PS: I just noticed you wrote ER nurse, so hey you probably have given adenocard, and may know more about the A&P of the heart than I thought. If you want the name of the md who did it, e mail me and I will slip you his name and you can look up some of his handywork on the internet.
