HPV or human papillomovirus can, if left untreated possibly turn into cancer. A great percentage of women have this virus but it is latent and you may never have symptoms. It can be treated with different procedures such as cryotherapy and then pap smears are taken every three months for a year, if the HPV cells do not appear for a year, you can go back to yearly paps. Whether or not it "goes away" is questionable, it can be in remission for long periods of time and never manifest itself with symptoms again but yearly pap smears are essential in monitoring this.

Yes. The HPV stands for the Human Papilloma Virus, which is a DNA virus. A lot of women have it but don't know it; some develop complications while others don't. It's like the cold virus, you can get it and it can go away.

However, HPV is the virus that causes cervical cancer, so it's not meant to be taken lightly. Getting a pap smear regularly helps prevent cervical cancer.

There is also an FDA-approved vaccine for HPV, as well.

yes this is true. about 75-80% of the population in the US is infected at some point in their life. most people are infected at a young age and clear their infection with their own immune system. some people are unable to clear the infections and have persistent hpv. those with persistent hpv are the women who are at highest risk of developing cervical dysplasia and cancer. people with compromised immune systems, such as hiv, lupus, organ transplants... are also at higher risk of having problems with hpv. smokers with hpv also have an increased risk. there is now a vaccine to prevent hpv, if you have any young girls in your family or friends, spread the word to get the vaccine before they acquire the most common std.

HPV can go away on it's own. Your bodies own natural immune system kills it, unless it's genital warts. Genital warts kind of HPV just goes into remission. It depends on the strain. If her doctor told her it's gone, then it was not a bad kind. Statistically 8 of every 10 sexually active women get, or have gotten it in their life.

Yes it is possible. For most people HPV does go away on it's own, but for some they have it the rest of their life. There is NO cure for HPV, but most peoples bodies can basically fight it off.
