There are many causes of snoring: it could be due to large tonsils and adenoids; could be a sinus problem; could be due to a long palate; could be due to fatty bulge in the pharynx due to fat (common in the overweight and obese) could be due to bulky tongue. Treatment could range from weight loss, contraptions to make it easier for air to pass through (CPAP, etc) to surgery to remove tissue and enlarge airway space. What treatment would depend on the severity of the problem. See your ENT doctor and learn what's your best option!

See a doctor.
I have snored and woke myself up, I have sleep apnea. I doctor said that my throat is closing off and I need a machine to force air into my lungs. If you still have your tonsils or adenoids, they can be causing a problem also, and if you are over-weight, it can be causing a strangulation of the lungs and heart.
Please see a doctor, they may have you go to a sleep clinic for further diagnose.

Find out why you are snoring, and fix it. My husband's problem was partially due to glucose intolerance (wheat, oats, barley and rye), partially due to lactose intolerance (dairy), partially due to a yeast infestation (see www.hufa.org - the yeast link) and partially due to his high insulin condition (hyperinsulinemia) which is probably the cause of his high blood pressure.
Needless to say, he has more weight on him than is good (about 100 pounds more), but that is due to the hyperinsulinemia too.
The quick fixes are a trip to the ENT doctor to see if sinus (which can be aggravated by some of the above) is part of the problem, and can be fixed with surgery; or earplugs for the wife (I have some I can give her, now.)

Have your thyroid checked and lose weight.
Extra weight crowds the throat and causes snoring, loss of sleep and sleep apnea.
Not to count annoyed spouses.
The major majority of snorers have a weight problem.

Talk to your doctor about having a sleep study done. You may have sleep apnea. It can be treated with a CPAP or BIPAP machine.

First try those nose strips that help open your air passageway in your nose. If those don't work, then go see your doctor. I don't think that is for a pulmonary doctor, but ask your family doctor and see if he could refer you to someone.
