Two weeks ago i started having a mild burning pain at the right side of my chest, it worsens when I smoke, I've been smoking for over 12 yrs now and i am 31 yrs old. Recently i increased my smoking rate from about half a pack a day to a pack a day cos i was really stressed up, thats when this pain started. I am over weight and i don't exercise much. I complained to my doctor and he gave me some painkillers and asked me to come back if the pain doesn't go away, I'vew finished the drugs and the pain is still there. I've decided to suspend smoking for a week to see if the pain will go away, if it does then i will consider quitting permanently. I have a 4 month old daughter and I'll like to live long enough to give her good education etc. The pain gets worse when i take a deep breadth or try to pull my stomach inwards. Is it possible that i have burned my lungs with heavy tobacco smoke or is this a symptom of something more sinister, i'd like to know before I go back to the doctor

Most likely you have not smoked long enough to have cancer. Also, 1/2 pack a day for a decade isn't excessive compared to most smokers. Nevertheless, you do need to attempt to quit as soon as possible. It is possible that the pain is acid reflux (cigarettes greatly increase this) which is backing up into your esophagus or even your bronchial tubes. Have you tried taking Prilosec? At any rate, please make a serious attempt to quit.

The pain you describe could be caused by many not yet life threatening causes, however if it increased when your smoking increased, then that is definitely a clue that you should quit smoking for good. I was barely 18 and still a Sr. in high school when my Dad died from Emphysema and related disorders. He wasn't there for my graduation, or to walk me down the aisle. My children never had a grandfather. Don't wait until you are diagnosed with an incurable disease to quit. No daughter should have to see a parent suffer like I watched my Dad the last 3 yrs of his life.

Go to the Dr., find out what is causing the pain, and do what you have to do to quit smoking. There are helps, and the well-being of your daughter and your daughters mother should be enough inspiration to get you moving.

Man u'lov u'r daughter right, Well I see some one on the same boat as me. I have a 6 year old son. I did quit 22 years of smoking for him. Go to the doc. for a checkup, I'm sure it is nothing serious, unless u choose to continue smoking. Avoid fatty food for some time control u'r diet. Start brisk walk in the mornings, Drink water early in the morning after brushing u'r teeth. Have a early dinner and give a considerable gab between dinner and bed. (Doesn't suit u'r life style Yeh), well it didn't me either. but I had to force it on for the love of my son. So try it and see the difference in 3 to 4 months and live happy to see u'r grand children.

At 31 given the time you have been smoking I suspect nothing more than a chest infection..but make this the wake up call you need to stop smoking...you have a young daughter its bad for her to be around a smoker...give up its amazing how quickly your lungs will recover not to mention your bank balance....

It could be one of many of things. You really need to go see your doctor and probably need to see a pulmonolgist. Whether the pain goes away or not you really need to quit smoking and start strolling your daughter everyday so it doesn't really feel like you're exercising.

I know of a patient once who had one of his lungs removed. Nevertheless he was so full of life. Surely, you had plan B in mind should all that puffing start affecting your health. Stop as of now... forever- not just for a week! I hope what's happening is a wake-up call. Good luck to you... and God bless.

Certainly do you alot of good if you first stop smoking.
The good news is you don't need to loose even apart of your lung. If you are fast enough to get liquid Zeolite, NCD ( Natural Cellular Defence) at http://www.mywaiora.com/698685 and for futher info on this zeolite go to http://www.zeoliteinfo.com .
