A Jewish friend who just lost a family member will be receiving friends at home during the mourning period, and I wanted to bring some homemade food when I visit. I thought of making challah bread. Would that be a good idea, or is challah only associated with festive occasions? My friend is not Orthodox, but I would not want to do something that could be seen as insensitive.

Generally speaking people keep shiva services kosher even if they are not kosher. They may have some family or friends that keep kosher that will not eat in their home if the food is not kosher. your best bet is either fruit or kosher pastries (look for a label). As for challah, it is used all the time, but not a good idea if not kosher.

Meshugganah, don't bring food made in your non-kosher kitchen to a Jewish home. Whether or not they may be Orthodox they will observe Kasruth law during a shiva. Order a fruit basket from a florist and have it sent. Fruit is always kosher. Don't make it yourself, it's too tacky. Or go to a Kosher bakery and buy something that doesn't need refrigeration, like cookies or ruggelah.
BTW don't ring the bell, just walk in the house announcing yourself by knocking at the door. Don't be so goyisher.

I would not. I would make something that is special that you have made. Chances are, they will want to remember it...but because of the fact they are mourning the death of a loved one...they will probably not remember the food...but your loving presence.
