Its true. Although it is a type of Staph infection its not as bad as people make it out to be. People hear the phrase "staph infection", they start to run to the hills. Rather then typing out everything I know about it, I copied a web site where you can read everything about it. But in short, there is no need for universal precautions.

Good luck...I hope your mom gets better soon

Some hospitals dont make you wear gloves some do, the hospital that I work in we wear gloves for MRSA< of course we have VRE, and TB as well.... I had MRSA in my throat, I work in a hospital as well. I was told we all walk around with it, it does not avail itself of our body until our immune system is weak, the hospital did a throat swab to see what would work on the MRSA and found TETRACYCLINE, I took it and feel much better, but will always have it, I think you call it colonized.

Depending on what area the MRSA has infected is what determines what precautions you should take. For instance, if she has it in her urine then not you do not have to take any precautions. If she has it in an open wound that you could easily come into contact with then you would need to wear gloves. If it is in her sputum/mucous then you would have to wear a mask. I have had MRSA in my surgical site (which I probably contracted from work since I work in a hopital ) but no one else in my home got it. All they did was to change my antibiotic and it cleared up my wound.
