STDs are, by definition, infections that you can get from having sexual contact. Sexual contact is not just penile/vaginal intercourse- it is also oral sex and anal sex (giving and receiving), as well as mutual masturbation and kissing.
On the continuum of risk, going from sexual activities that carry a high risk of getting an STD to activities that are lower in terms of risk of giving you an STD- kissing would be a low risk activity.
Despite what other people have said- there are no reported cases of HIV being transmitted by kissing. Period. It could happen- if you and the person you were kissing both had infected, and profusely bleeding sores in your mouths. If this was the case, I dont think either of you would really be in the mood to make out.
You can't get gonorrhea or chlamydia from kissing. Syphilis can only be transmitted when someone has a sore from the syphilis (called a primary lesion). This is a relatively big sore. You can't get HPV- human papilloma virus (genital warts) through kissing.
You can get herpes from kissing (1 or 2- 1 usually means the type of herpes that causes cold sores in people, and 2 usually refers to genital sores- but either can infect either location.)Herpes is a virus- which means there is no treatment, but it can be controlled with medicine.
You could also get mono, or a cold.
Thats it.

Some STD's can in fact be contracted from kissing. Here are some facts you need to know:
Herpes type A is actually cold sores. You can pass these on very easily. And if you perform oral sex on someone and have a cold sore then you will give them Herpes. Herpes Type B, is slightly different and can be passed just as easily, but is the harsher form of the STD.
HIV/AIDS is rarely passed through just kissing, UNLESS you or your partner have open sores in your mouths. Otherwise you would have to drink about "10" gallons of saliva. However, it can be passed by oral sex.
Hepatitis C can be passed orally. It can also be contracted through drinking water.
Chlamydia can be passed by oral sex, rarely by kissing.
Truly there are not many STD's that can be passed through kissing. But either way you must ALWAYS be cautious.

Kissing will not give you STDs on most normal circumstances. You would need to drink 1 gallon of saliva to contract AIDS from someone. Herpes can be transmittted through kisses

It can give you Herpes Complex 1 Which makes sores on your lips and is very unpleasant. Otherwise it is pretty hard to get any other through kissing.

Yes it's possible with some.
AIDS/HIV is one for sure.
Any doctor/nurse/health care professional who deals with AIDS/HIV patients in a hospital/care facility will use gloves, usually multiple layers of them in an attempt to protect themselves. Extreme care is taken to not get any bodily fluid, saliva, tears, blood, in contact with any part of themselves or others.
It's best to save your kisses for the one you marry.
