I think GUM or Sexual Health clinics at hospitals are the best. They often have a walk in service so no need to make an appointment. Also, they carry out the tests all day, every day so are very experienced and it saves the embarrassment of going to a GP.

They take blood samples (for HIV) a urine sample and give an internal examination where they take swaps from you urethra and cervix. This is a little painful but no too bad.

You can request a female doctor or a chaperone if you wish.

I recommend the one at St Barts if you happen to live in London

It's best to go to a GUM clinic to ensure that everything remains confidential. You don't even have to give your name in if you don't want to they'll give you a reference number.
A GP is fine and may be convenient but it will go on your medical records and may be used against you when applying for a mortgage or life insurance - whether the test is negative OR positive.
Look in your local phone book or go to the link and click on 'search'
Generally speaking the tests involve a swab, an internal and/or external examination and a blood test. HIV tests are done seperately and it is your choice to be tested for HIV or not.

Your local hospital should have a unit attached so look on the web or in the phonebook for the gu clinic. You make an appointment and its all done respectfully and discreetly. They examine you for any physical signs and then take swabs. You can request an HIV test and they take a sample of blood. Results in about a week. Its not a traumatic experience as you might imagine as the staff are very gentle, non-judgemental and kind.

Any doctor's office will usually do it. If not men or women can go to planned parenthood clinics, and even hospitals will do it. Depending on which diseases you want checked for they will either take blood, urine, mouth swabs, genital swabs, physical inspection, etc. They usually ask you questions about your sexual history and if you've had any unusual problems "down there" i.e. itching, swelling, discharge, odors, etc. they usually check hiv and syphilis by blood although hiv can be done with a mouth swab too. chlymadia & gonarrhea are urine or genital swab. Herpes & warts probably have tests, but usually people know if they have those so I don't think they automatically test for that unless you ask, and what the test involves, I'm not sure.

Go to you local GUM clinic direct, you do not have to through your gp. You can buy home tests over the internet but i think it is only for certain std. I have never been but for women they usually take a swob and scraping samples to test, its like a smear. Why not get one of your good friends to go with you so your not alone. Good luck xx

Go to your docs, or family planning clinic.
Assuming you are a woman, they take samples from your cervix, its just like having a smear.
They may also take blood for HIV/AIDs test.
You should get the results in like 3-5 days. SImple as.
