If you cannot find fresh one, most Oriental markets have them dried, I have only been to the airport in Pittsburgh, be find a Chinese, Japanese or any prodominatly Asian Food store, ask for fresh or dried, the dried one like mushrooms can be reconstituted in warm water, and then cooked in any manner, stewed, stir frys or deep fried in batter as in Tempura.

look for the nearest chinatown, they'll have fresh lotus root there.
