my daughter had hers replaced when she was 15 months old. It was 4 days from the surgery until she went home. She was playing and jumping in her hospital crib 2 days out of surgery and the dr. said that she could as long as it wasn't causing her pain.

My mother had open heart surgery to replace her mitral valve. It was a week before she was out of ICU, three weeks til she left hospital and another two months before she was able to do things normally. It's major surgery.
In a way they never fully recover because they have to be mindful of taking things easy and not over exerting themselves. They also need to take anticoagulants every day for the rest of their lives to lessen the chance of clots forming and causing heart attacks and strokes.
However, recovery time does depend on the patients age, health and general response to surgery, aswell as any problems before, during and after surgery.
Hope this helps.
