Gary, Gary, Gary. How very wrong you are. Salads can be so fabulous. I prepare salad with baby leaves picked fresh from the garden - a variety of flavours from almost tasteless (I grant you) to knock your socks off pepper and mustard. I add cucumber (leave the skin on - thats the bit that tastes), cherry tomatoes fresh from the green house, apple, water melon, hard boiled egg, sultanas, mushrooms, finely sliced spring onions (from the garden), sometimes I'll add some sprigs of raw broccoli or cauliflower. Drizzle with olive oil, red wine vinegar and a twist of freshly ground black pepper.

How could you even suggest that that would be tasteless?

You are clearly eating the wrong sort of salad mate.

Salads can be delicious. They are not fattening, they fill your stomach and provide vitamins and roughage. It is just that the run of the mill salad ingredients in this country are rather bland.

There are are all sorts of combinations that make them tasty, and numerous dressings on the market to add interest. What is more they are quick to prepare. I did not realise all this until I went abroad where they perk up assorted green leaves with fruit such as peaches, pears, apples, apricots, pineapple chunks, dates, tomatoes, or add chicory or cress, even grated carrots. They even slice raw baby mushrooms, chop in hard -boiled eggs or salami, cooked bacon bits and also put in a variety of nuts.

You can make your own dressing , two thirds olive oil to one third wine or raspberry vinegar, salt, pepper, a shake of sugar, and a fresh herb of your choice such as parsley.( My mother used to rub garlic round the bowl but I know that is not to eveyone's taste.) Put the dressing at the bottom of the bowl before the salad ingredients and toss vigourously so that the leaves are evenly coated. Use your imagination and use ingredients you like and your salads will taste of something! Try and you will get hooked, I promise.

Because, there's alot of variety to salads and they can taste very good. There is a chain of restaurants called Souplantation/Sweet Tomatoes and they specialize in salad and soup buffet dining. You would be surprised at how many people really enjoy eating salad, when you see the business this place does. It's a personal favorite of mine and my kids!

If you think salads have no flavor, then you've never had a good salad. First off, don't use iceberg lettuce; it's mostly water and has little nutiritional value. I use a variety of leafy greens and a ton of colorful veggies, along with olives, toasted pine nuts, a little balsamic vinaigrette and a sprinkle of parmesan and my salads taste delicious. People eat them because they like them and because it's one way of making a dent in those 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables that we need each day.

because salads are healthy and have lots of nutritions with less or no calories, rather than meat. Thus, some people are vegetarian so salad is a good source of healthy food to eat.

People put some sort of dressing on salad to compliment the lettuce and veggies.

Salad is great for you too (except iceberg which has little value). Lots of essential nutrients are found in dark leafy greens, tomatoes, carrots etc.

It increases the blood circulation, decreases hypertension, dysentry, blood pressure and improves eyesight (for kids). The salad cream is fat-free and other leafy stuff is for the fiber. An ideal salad consists of 4-5 vegetables ..

Plain lettuce yes would be boring. Use your imagination and add things to your salad and top it off with a great tasting dressing.
