Depends on what type of diabetes. Basically, the problem is in the pancreas. The pancreas is the one responsible for producing insulin which plays a part in converting glucose (simplest form of sugar that comes from the foods we eat) to another form which will give energy to the body. In diabetes, the pancreas is defective in that either it cannot produce enough insulin to participate in the aforementioned glucose conversion reaction or it produces enough insulin but the insulin itself is "weak."

It is when the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin to allow the cells tn your body to accept the nutrient that are carried in your blood stream. The nutrients then are passed through your urine. You can eat and eat but you will not accept the food and then that causes an increase in thirst due to the fact there is so much more waste that it increases the body's need for fluids. There are theories that diabetes is caused from a virus that inadvertently attacks the pancreas

Diabetes (medically known as diabetes mellitus) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose, or sugar. It occurs when your body produces little or no insulin or when your cells don’t respond appropriately to the insulin that is produced. Diabetes usually can’t be cured; left untreated — or poorly managed — it can lead to serious long-term complications, including kidney failure.
