I have been living in Malaysia since 1994, the first time my room mate brought home durian, I made a big fuss. I really hated the smell. After I got married in 1995, my husband's family bought some durian and I really cried and lock myself in the room and I would never allow the fruit anywhere near me. My husband begged me to try so I did and I hated it. Even our dog loved durian.

Then in 2005, my collegue brought some durian from Melaka, the smell is not too bad and my collegues asks me to try it, just one seed. So I went to try it, this durian was from his son-in-laws orchard and it taste great. Really creamy.

From then on, I've been trying different types of durian.

It's pretty much the most disgusting thing ever. I also tested the fatty-oily content once (you can put foods on brown paper bag and see how much oily fat leaks onto the paper; durian had a ton). It has the texture of an avocado, like someone said, but a lot more dense. The smell is basically like rotting garbage and corpses, and smell hugely affects taste, so needless to say, the taste was awful. It also has the aftertaste of rotting garbage and corpses. I'm not sure why people eat it, but some of my family members are crazy about it.

Yes. The Smithsonian did a spread on them about 3 years ago and called them "A Slice of Heaven" once you get past the smell. I was in San Francisco and saw a place with Durian gelato, so I tried it, expecting something wonderful, and instead it tasted like rotting garbage. It was nasty.

My good friend's mother brought a huge fresh durian over and I was forced to try some. She kept bragging how great it was and expensive it was.

The smell was horrible and it took a lot for me to even put a small piece into my mouth. The taste and the smell were very close for me and I was forced to run to the kitchen, where I spit it out into the garbage.

She was so generous and wanted to leave it for me to try again later and I had to beg her to take it with her when she left. Honestly, I can't believe how smelly they are.

But as my mother always taught me, you should always try something and form your own opinions.

I would never put anything in my mouth that smells as bad as durian or fresh coffee. I lived in Singapore for 3 years. I hated to see durian season come around. My mother-in-law is Asian and she loves them. I just can't get past the smell.

Yes, I have. the texture is like avocado. very unique strong smell. I didn't like it when I first tried it. after the second time, I absolutely love it. eating it raw is a little intense. I like it made into icy. The thing is you got to try couple times before you know whether you enjoy or hate.
