I have given a $40 tip for a $50 meal before. The server was excellent and gave us exquisite service. It was right before Christmas and she was our regular server and a single mom. Normally, if the service is good I'll tip 20% but the tip does go down if the server is inattentive.

It depends on the service that I received. I expect the waiter or waitress to at least come back to the table to see if everything is okay and if we need anything else , at least a couple of times. I usually leave about 20 %, sometimes more if there is a lot of us and they service was good. If they want tips they should provide service accordingly

Christmas Eve 2004 I left a $50 tip on a $50 ticket. We were not finished with our food when the resturant closed and the waiter didnt mind. It was one of those things where he ran after us in the parking lot and said we forgot our change. I just shook his hand and told him Merry Christmas. Usually i give 15% of price

Restaurant is 15%, but for fine dinning where there's more attention to service, it's 20%.

My husband and I have eaten at a very upscale restaurant and our bill was $600.00, we left a $110.00 tip. He is usually a big tipper because he says that is what they are working for. If they made alot of money they wouldn't be waiteresses or waiters. He always over tips.
