Not normally unless rules have changed recently

Very, very rarely. In fact, I don't think that I've ever been asked that - it's normally the name and a contact telephone number that's needed. Unless you're staying at a hotel for the night, and eating in the restaurant of the hotel - then I'd expect the credit card details to be taken, but that's more to do with the room than the restaurant.

No. They will want a name and maybe a contact tel. no. Your credit card details are irrelevant - you could be paying by cash or cheque....or someone else could be paying. To book a room in a hotel they will ask for card details but not for booking a table. Don't give your details.

I work in a place with a very good a la carte restaurant, they ask for cc details for bookings of 6 people or more. I'm not sure why as they'd never charge anyone if they didn't show up but it's just a procedure.

Depends on the restaurant. Really busy places sometimes will, because if you stand them up on a reservation they may charge you a fee or something. Not TOO many places do that, but I've definitely gone to places that do. Usually only very busy, and upscale places though, and even then, it might depend on the night, etc. Like a weekend they will be more likely to need to keep reservations in order. Also, they may use it to verifiy you at time of arrival.

It's possible...I just booked a table at Jamie Oliver's Fifteen and they asked me for my credit card details. I believe it depends on how busy / popular the restaurant is...

no they ask how many you are booking for, the date and time you will be there, your name and a contact phone number for you. some places will ask if its a special occasion and if the booking is for over a certain amount of people some places will ask you to go and pay a deposite

I have booked many times over the phone and have never been asked for C/C details.
Why the hell would they want to do this anyway?
Maybe to protect loss of earnings and charge a fee-like a deposit-for you not turning up!
Can they do this though without warning you?
Think not!
