I becamea diabetic at the age of 10. I did not follow the "rules" of being a good diabetic (eating the right foods, testing my blood sugar, getting the appropriate exercise, etc) and at the age of 27 I was told my kidney's were failing. They finally failed when I was 37, I had a kidney/pancreas transplant after 7 months of dialysis, and now I am 48 and doing well with the transplant but am having problems due to the medication I take to avoid organ rejection issues. The bottom line of this story is your ability to survive and be as healthy as possible with diabetes means FOLLOWING THE RULES!!!! The thing with diabetes is it catches you by suprise very slowly. You may not even be aware of the damage you are doing to yourself when you don't follow the rules. And believe me, diabetes has many complications that can occur as part of having it. Heart issues, stroke issues, blindness, amputations, blindness, etc. It may sound awful but a lot of it is somewhat avoidable if you take care of yourself. I would think you should be able to have children but keep in mind that one of the side effects of diabetes is nerve damage and that can affect a males ability to maintain an erection. I also smoked up until about 4 years ago and smoking is also bad for a diabetis because it causes narrowing of the blood vessels which can also contribute to nerve damage ( and the ability to maintain an erection.) It is difficult to tell you what to expect. Everyone is different and his attitude toward the disease is what will make the difference. In all honesty, if you're looking for a personal guarantee that he will not have problems before you can allow yourself to love him and stay by his side "in sickness and in health", then you don't love him very much. Good luck to you both.

Well my brother has diabetes and well i don't think it will affect u guys not getting pregnant, but the smoking might be a problem. As long as he takes his shots and his insulin and watches what he eats, he should be fine with not going blind. But the whole smoking i'm not sure if that will affect, it won't get him blind but it might give him cancer (lung) and u too, second hand smoke

Stay healthy

p.s its not a good idea for a diabetic to smoke !

I have had diabetes since i was 2 and I am now 25, and it has not limited my in anyway, as long as he watches what he eats, checks his blood glucose regularly and take his medicines like he should, the there should be no problem.

Blindness is caused in diabetics by their blood-sugars being poorly maintained putting more of a strain on the blood vessels going to the eye, he should quit smoking because that restricts blood vessels, and the chromosome for the diabetic gene is carried on the male side, but you would need to ask a pediatrician or perinatologist what the chances would be of your children becoming diabetic.

No doubt, diabetes is bad. You should be able to have children (when the mother has diabetes, that's when you encounter problems), but know that any child with a parent who has diabetes has a 50% chance of also getting diabetes one day, so you may not want to bring a child into this world knowing this ahead of time. There are laser surgeries available to correct the retinopathy that diabetes can cause; just make sure your man takes care of his diabetes, keeps his blood sugar in the acceptable range, and sees his doctors for diagnostic tests regularly (usually every 3 to 4 months). They can help him to live a long and happy life. Don't have him in the grave yet; if he takes care of himself, he will probably live for many more years. But no, diabetics diagnosed young do not live to be old men in their 80s or 90s like other people. We tend to die earlier like in our 50s or 60s.

You are saying that your boyfriend has Diabetes, and should you be concerned,Are you the same age or younger then he is? Were both of you planning on getting married in the future? First of all you have a long and hard future with him, if he has lost his vision in one eye, most probably he will loose the sight of the other eye. And his smoking a lot is not going to help him any, he might get emphysema in his lungs. If you really love him and plan to stay with him no matter what the future might hold for you both, get ready for a long and hard journey because diabetes is a silent killer when you do not know what organ is not going to be functioning in the body. Please, have a long talk with him, about this disease, and I would suggest that you have time for yourself to think if you are able to stand whatever the future will hold for you and him. I know because my husband has diabetes, and he has had bypass surgery on his left leg because of poor circulation, Diabetics also get sores on their toes and they have to see a podiatrist or they might loose their toes, or even their foot.

I have had a few friends who have had diabetes. One died 2 years ago because it took over his body, one went completely blind but she hid candy around her house so it was the extra sugar that got her eyes and another friend has to take two shots of insulin each day and she watches what she eats and is surviving just fine.

I would be concerned since he has lost one eye. Just help him. Buy a diabetes book, I found one thru Avon but I haven't gone thru it yet. I am going to make my family eat my way. Mean aren't I.

To put it bluntly, if he has already gone blind in one eye at 31...and he smokes like a chimney. Well, the smoking is simply adding fuel to a very hot fire...and every diabetic knows this.
If he can't quit smoking to prevent the big stroke or more that he may have in the future then he needs to pick out a tomb stone soon.
That's the reality.

Sure, his poor health will affect your future with him. You may become a young widow with small children if he does not try to fix his bad lifestyle.

He has to make the change for himself, you can't make him. You can try guiding him to better choices, but you can't force him. I guess he needs to realize how much his behavior could affect you. Maybe that part has not sunk in on him yet.

Contact a Diabetes Educator. Your BF's Doctor (or even YOUR Doctor) should be able to put you in contact with one. Most Hospitals have them also. They conduct classes, and will have MANY types of pamphlets to help you educate yourself and your BF.
GOOD LUCK!!
