If you are having heart palpitations, it could be from to much caffeine. From my personal experience, I needed a valve replacement. I suggest that you go to your doctor and let he or she tell you what they think and if you are not satisfied with the answer then take it further. It is your life and not anyone else's.

If you've eliminated the caffeine and the palpitations are continuing, get a second opinion. During a routine exam, when my GP found I had palpitations, he had me wear a monitor for 24 hours. This lead him to perscribe medication (Toprol) which has greatly improved the problem. Incidently, my doctor never told me to cut out my 2-3 cups of coffee.

Your digestion has absolutely nothing to do with your heart rate and rhythm.
Make sure what your experiencing is a real heart rate change rather than just something weird going on in your chest which you think is heart flutter. Take your pulse at your wrist when you feel this. It should be like the ticking of a clock, that is very regular. It should be 60-90 beats per minute at rest.
If it is irregular or faster (at rest) you need to see you doc for a workup. (incidently one of the most common irregular heart beats in people your age is caused by binge drinking, so make sure your not doing this)

jessie is right, gas can become trapped under the heart because part the stomach lies just under the heart , this can cause a flutter or as some describe an extra beat, or skipped beat, hiatal hernia can also cause this sensation it is a weird feeling but nothing that will kill you , unless you take your pulse and it is not steady beat then get to the ER quick , but once in a while is no big deal

Contrary to jmensch's belief, your heart rate can be affected by digestion. My stepfather has had this problem for 3 years and they haven't figured it out yet. When he eats, his heart rate changed, he gets flushed and has pain. It's not his heart, that much they know. They are starting to think that it has something to do with a nerve called a Vagus (sp?) Nerve.
