Italian fried dough is typically called "Zeppole" or" St Joseph's Cakes". You can find info on this type of Italian fried dough at
http://home.comcast.net/~osoono/ethnicdoughs/zeppole/zeppole.htm
It is also referred to as fritters and they are made a bit like donuts without holes. Go to this site for info

I came across a Paluccis Pizza Restaurant in Cayuga, Indiana.
Perhaps your mom referred to the fried dough by their name because she made it like they did? I have never heard of fried dough referred to by that name.
Another way Italians make fried dough is in the shape of mini pizzas. They are about 4 or 5" across and you can put sauce and cheese on them for dinner or ground beef or even sausage.
