There is a street called the Cowgate, now I spent many a pleasant evening down there at a really cool rock bar but I can't remember the name for the life of me! But it's really good (well I hope it's still there - haven't been in two years) It;s popular so just ask folk when you get there, it's not far from Bannermans which can do some good live music, it's fairly mixed.

I heard that Sandy Bell's is really good for trad but I never actually made it myself, if you are looking for something that is absolutely old school try the Royal oak, I found it by pure chance with my dad and sister who were visiting while I lived there, we are all trad fans and it's like an old pubs from the 60's (well it is really) and the craic was great and not at all touristy, but if you want the cheesy stuff try around the Royal mile

enjoy it I loved the place and if you want something different club wise try honeycomb on niddry street, a club in the old caves under the city, great stuff
