My son got sick right after Labor Day wknd. He has been real stuffy, and coughing, etc. He has been on 2 antibiotics, saline nose drops everyday, suctioning out his nose, a decongestant 4 times a day, breathing treatments 4 to 5 times a day, and still not better. He has had no fever through out this whole thing. Any suggestions? Oh yeah, and he is only 5 months old.

It could be RSV. If it is that would explain why the antibiotics won't work because RSV is a virus and antibiotics only work on bacterial infections. Also, RSV can take up to 1-2 months before your baby is well.

He must have gotten exposed to something in the air. But is kind of sounds like there was a previous problem with this lungs in the first place. He may be asthmatic and you might want to watch the environment he is breathing in. Hopefully he is not allergic to anything either. Make sure no one smokes around him. It can go away too, however. On the other hand, He is still so young that his body is still developing. If he has a strong immune system this will eventually pass. Ask your doctor is there is anything you can do in the meantime to help build his immune system.

My daughter went through the same thing at that young age. Come to find out she was asthmatic. So the slightest cold would land her on a breathing machine. She also acquired bronchioli virus which landed her in the hospital for three days. Make sure that no one is smoking around him, don't burn any scented candles, don't use any potpourri or air fresheners, and don't let anyone with perfume around him. Babies breathe faster than we do so all these things will aggravate an already sensitive respiratory system. Even if he is not asthma prone these things will still irritate him. Another thing is to make sure your air conditioning filter is clean at all times. There is really no way to diagnose him as asthmatic at such a young age but he obviously has a sensitive respiratory system so these things can only help. Keep in touch with his doctor and update him on any changes for the worse or medication that he is not responding to.

My husband's persistent coughing and congestion was found out to be due to gluten intolerance (wheat, oats, rye and barley). He is also lactose intolerant. He has allergies, too.
I would suggest you ask your doctor to check your son for high insulin production. This condition can be responsible for other chemical imbalances that might aggravate asthma, allergies and other problems. This would be especially important to test for if you have a family history of diabetes or obesity.
www.hufa.org has some basic info on one of the conditions caused by high insulin - low blood sugar, but the library link has some books that have good info about all blood sugar imbalances. "Enter the Zone" by Barry Sears, Ph.D. comes to mind.
Hope this helps.

It could be Cystic Fibrosis. Since antibiotics doesn't do anything or probablt asthma. That's the symptoms I had at that age. I also had failure to thrive. You can get a diagnosis by a sweat test. But just go see a doctor, it won't hurt anything.

5mo? take him to the doctor, they know more.
I was going to say leave him alone, cause the kid could fight it off himself, but at that age...ask for real help, not bored people.

you should do one or both of the following:
1. call your local nurse hotline and talk to them
2. call his pediatrician and talk to them.
But, do it like now.
