Mr. loving father is correct to a point. Use a cleaver and smack the clove. The flat of the cleaver and a heavy one at that.
I live in Asia where garlic is a main part of almost every dish. I see the gals do this every day. Otherwise use a garlic press and the skin stays in the press.
If you want them whole then nip the top end of each clove and dip them in hot water a few seconds and then with top end facing away from you pinch the clove with your finger and thumb and clove will pop out

Seperate the garlic cloves from the head and soak them in hot water for a few minutes. This is how the dishwashers at a restaurant i worked at cleaned them. After a few minutes the skins come off easily.

You mean Peel off the skin of Garlic ? It is easy. As IrinaC has said use microwave to peel off, but one thing is that in he oil that come out maximum portion of the medicinal effect will be lost. What we do in our home is -
Separate the cloves of garlics from the bulb and apply some Oil (we put sesame oil or groundnut oil) and keep it in the sunlight for about an hour or so and the skin will peel off easily. By this you do not loose any food value also.

2 ways: (I use them both equally)
1. smash the garlic by laying your chef's knife on top of it (covering it), then press down. The skin will fall off.
2. Just stick the piece of garlic, skin and all, into your garlic press. The skin stays in the chamber, and the smushed garlic flies out of the little holes.

My favorite way to skin lots of cloves is to separate them and drop them in a quart size ziplock. Then I use the flat side of a meat mallet or a rolling pin to thwack them. They don't fly all over and I don't endanger my hand thwacking the flat side of a knife blade. I peel off the rest into the baggie, and then toss the whole thing- minus the peeled cloves, of course.

cut the end, and put it in your microwave for 10 seconds, the oils release and you squeeze the garlic out of its skin,,
you can also take whole clove, cut the top and put some salt and olive oil on it and bake it until tender,, is great to eat

Seperate the cloves, take a piece of hosepipe, and roll over the cloves. The skins should just fall off.

Make a slit in the skin of each clove, put it in a plastic bag and then roll the bag between your hands. the skins should roll off or loosen off so they come of easily.

Try the Rachel Ray method... Separate the cloves from the bulb. Lay each clove on the flat. Take the flat side of a knife, and rest it on the pointed edge, and smack the knife with your hand. No lie at all - it works great!
