I donot think it originated in one place in India. It might have been followed by tribes people who inhabited the south asian peninsula.Once the population settled into farming,it was necessary to replace the foods which were found by hunting. It is really difficult to trace exactly how they discovered that pulses along with rice provided the protein and the necessary amino acids plus the carbohydrates could provide the same energy as a piece of meat. But I guess they learnt through experimentation and observation. This is a staple of the diet in all the states of India.

not in india my friend!! it is "The cuisine of Bangladesh" n has considerable regional variations.

A staple across the country however is rice and dhal (sometimes written as dal). As a large percentage of the land (over 80% on some occasions) can be under water, either intentionally because of farming practices or due to severe climatological, topographical or geographical conditions. The staples of Bangladeshi cuisine are rice, atta (a special type of whole wheat flour), and at least five dozen varieties of pulses, the most important of which are chana (bengal gram), toor (pigeon pea or red gram), urad (black gram), and mung (green gram). Pulses are used almost exclusively in the form of dal, except chana, which is often cooked whole for breakfast and is processed into flour (besan).

From the slums of India where they have got nothing except rice and daal to eat through out the year for all generations. Rice and Daal will remain as it is as long as the slums and poor remain in India.
