He can keep taking pancreating enzyme with his food for protein digestion, and he would quite possibly have diabetes if he has destroyed his pancreating islet cells (insulin production cells).

He can live many years if he is good and looks after himself, however some people who have bad pancreatitis have developed this from alcohol. Ongoing alcohol consumption will have deleterious effects on the rest of the body. I would ask the doctor. There are 2 parts of the pancreas the digestive enzyme protion and the insulin portion. If both shut down, you are in real trouble! The insulin portion is under revriew

What the Dr. meant was it quite producing insulin. This is type 1. He just needs insulin a few times a day or a pump. I take 5-6 shots a day and my insulin productin stopped 2 years ago.

With the right diet and having the correct medication administered he should be able to live a normal life style and live for ages just make sure he has his sugar level tested at least 3 times per day and the reading should be 6or7.diet is extremely important to maintain these levels eg( not to much sweet stuff) or gan-green can occur usually toes and fingers and they may have to be amputated but if the levels are kept normal this should not occur.

Iv owned a dog til old age that did not have a working pancreas.His name was Rusty.He lived a good full healthly life on a no fat diet.He ate,,everyday,,rice with boiled boneless chicken,,liver or beef with cooked veggies.He was older & running up & down the stairs.Good luck.

He can live a good long time, he just is now an insulin dependant diabetic.
