I disagree. Your friend may not like flour tortillas, but I married into a Hispanic family here in Dallas and that's all they eat. They even prefer them to corn, so I think it's really a preference thing. I've never heard them put down flour or corn or say anything about "little kid food", so I'm not sure where your friend is getting the info. At most of the Mexican restaurants they serve flour tortillas as the appetizers too, like with the chips and salsa. I love em!

Outside of Mexico, flour tortillas have become more popular so finding corn ones is a bit more difficult if you live elsewhere, and so you may turn to flour which are more readily available.
In Central and Southern Mexico, corn tortillas are the most popular since that's the custom passed on from ancestors and it's also the base of some of the poorer communities' diets (since they're cheaper than the flour ones), they're also big with people who watch what they eat since they're high in fiber and not so high in calories. In Northern Mexico, flour tortillas are king. I live in Northern Mexico and there's even a saying that states that a girl should only get married after she knows how to make flour tortillas from scratch. Guess I'm set, mine taste great even if they come out square-shaped! :)

It all comes down to a matter of preference...

Most of your true Mexican families eat flour tortillas with every meal instead of bread. They use corn tortillas to prepare certain dishes. Some Mexican women I know make fresh tortillas once a week. They will make enough for their family at home and enough for the family members that have moved out. Usually, they will spend almost 1/2 of the day doing this.

Yes yes yes yes yes! That is completely true. Guess why?

(while you guess I'll give you some funny trivia)

Most Mexican don't know "burritos", and where they make them (Northern Mexico) they don't use rice. Burritos made with corn tortilla are called flautas and are about 1/2 of their size.

Quesadillas are originally made in corn tortillas and some don't even have "queso" (cheese), there are some made with the flowers that come from pumpkins called "huitlacoche".

There is a common saying that goes, "A falta de pan tortilla", or When there's no bread, have a tortilla, meaning, when you don't have something you need handy, make the best of what you're left with.

And back to the answer, the reason why you would eat a lot more corn tortillas than flour is... because flour ones take longer to make. Unlike in the US, people don't eat "plastic-bag" tortillas, they buy them daily from tortillerias or a "tortilla man" who for a very small fee goes around entire neighborhoods delivering freshly made tortillas much like pizza-men deliver pizzas. Flour tortillas, besides costing roughly 5-6 times more than corn tortillas, take a normal family about 2-3 hours to make and are usually only good for 1-2 days, otherwise they will get hard and un-eatable, so they're rarely made everyday and hand-made corn tortillas are even harder to find. :)

Again, this is for Mexico's Mexicans, in the States, they'll probably eat about the same, since they're both as available as a loaf of bread.

I'm not seeing the numbers to support your question. there are 310 million Americans and 112 million Mexicans. So if the only number you have is 85 billion tortillas, I can't answer cogently. Last I heard, there was a sort of panic in the corn market because American farmers have been growing corn for ethanol, thereby creating a shortage in the world corn markets for tortilla corn. This made prices rise in Mexico. BTW, corn tortillas are pretty healthy for you. So if people are consuming more corn, that's not entirely a negative event. And if Americans eat more corn, that may not be an intentional thing- getting Mexicanized.

Most of the Mexican people that I know like both corn and flour tortillas, it usually depends of the food that is being eaten. For instance they usually eat corn tortillas with pozole or menudo , and then flour when they eat meats, beans and rice. I guess it is a personal preference

Yes...

Well, I can only speak for my husbands area...he is from a town close to Guadalajara, and he says they NEVER eat those.

He only eats corn tortillas.

Have you ever tried a real, homemade CORN tortilla? The texture is closer to that of a flour tortilla...it is sooo good.
