Soaks up excess oil and/or salt.

Some of us have a pretty heavy hand with the old salt shaker, and the last few bites can taste like they're soaked in brine, otherwise.

A no of reasons :1) to collect grease 2) easy collection of the popcorn 3) so that the bowl wont get dirty thus no need to wash.

I never put a napkin under the popcorn in a bowl especially microwave popcorn. Now I am curious.

It is to absorb the grease, and yes, microwave popcorn contains grease or oil like all the others.

If the popper bowl is hot and the bowl is placed on a wooden table then moisture will form under the bowl. The napkin keeps the ring from developing a ring.

Besides, his auntie Berta always did it and it just seems the right thing to do.

To soak up the grease from the butter or cooking oil

Who does that? The butter and grease is what makes it good. Its just a holdover from the days when you would put kernals in a pot with oil. Still, even then it was silly if you made it right.

So the "extra" butter doesn't pool at the bottom of the bowl, soaking the last few pieces.
Easier to clean up!

to soak up the extra butter and oil and stuff so that way it just goes on the napkin and you can throw it out as opposed to washing it out of the bowl and down in to the drain in your sink and having it build up there

if microwaved the bottom of the bowl is the last area to cool so the napkin is used to keep from getting burned.i prefer a dish towel. also it is used to wipe your hands on after you are finished
