Food designers do weird tricks with food to make the food look great. The food is real, just not edible. Like, you know how bowls of cereal look like they have the creamiest milk? That's Elmer's glue mixed in. They shellac vegetables and fruits to make them shiny. And arrange it all. Then the photographer takes the pics. It's fascinating.

culinary arts was my major in college.. food design, or rather food styling was my minor... food stylists can work with food on or off camera... on camera items would include food that is already prepared for the chef or tv hosts so he/she can present it to the viewers as the final product...food stylists even create the food that are shown in tv commercials.. off camera would include.. packaging on food..ex. they create the cereal that goes on the cereal boxes... and food stylists are also hired to make food items for cookbooks and magazine photos as well... food stylists get the recipe from the chef...go out and buy the most perfect looking ingredients they can find..cook the food.. and style it to make it look perfect and attractive....hope that helps!
