It can be acute or chronic. Acute form is more common. Chronic pneumonias develop gradually over a period of weeks to months and are caused by numerous (unusual) microorganisms like fungi, protozoa and mycoplasma.
Hope that helps

It depends on the severaty of the infection. Mild or acute pnumnioa can be cleared up with a 7 day course of antibioics(z- pack) to a larger, more serious dose of anti-biotics (20 day course of XL-Bioxin) A Chronic case of Pnumonia, requres hospitalization immediatly. You can expeact anywhere from a 6 day to month stay at the hospital. (Peding on if the infection was able to spread to the other lung.)

It is an acute inflammation of the lungs. However, if you have several factors that predispose you to pneumonia then it can become chronic as you are diagnosed more and more often.

Pneumonia can be caused by bacteria or virus. If the cause is bacterial, the goal is to cure the infection with antibiotics. If the cause is viral, antibiotics will NOT be effective. In some cases it is difficult to distinguish between viral and bacterial pneumonia, so antibiotics may be prescribed.
With treatment, most patients will improve within two weeks. Elderly or debilitated patients who fail to respond to treatment may die from respiratory failure.

Pneumonia is acute, there is no such thing as "chronic pneumonia" although some people may be more susceptible than others.
