Cottage is made with beef and Sheperds with lamb. I find the original recipe a bit bland, so I add a whole pepper (red or green chopped), garlic and Tabasco sauce with Worcestershire sauce. I also do 50% potato and 50% swede sometimes.

In theory, the difference is that Shepherd's Pie uses lamb and Cottage Pie uses beef. In practice, though, it seems like everybody uses beef, and everybody calls it Shepherd's Pie, whether they're cooking at home or in a restaurant. If there's never any left, it sounds like you already *have* a winner of a recipe. Mine is somewhat different, but there's never any left of it, either. It's a pretty good concept for a casserole, and there are many great recipes. Although you might want to try adding a bit of red wine....

potatoes are tubers, which are like nodules on the root of the plant. The plants are related to the tomato plant although the fruit (which looks like a green tomato) is NOT edible.
Swedes are brassicas which means they are related to cabbages. The leaves can be eaten as well as the roots. Swedes are a variety of turnip.

I really like both fruits and fresh vegetables better, however they look and taste. You desire a little of both.
