The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States is currently in the midst of phase III trials of a vaccine against HSV-2. The vaccine has only been shown to be effective for women who have never been exposed to HSV-1. Overall, the vaccine is approximately 48% effective in preventing HSV-2 seropositivity and about 78% effective in preventing symptomatic HSV-2. Assuming FDA approval, a commercial version of the vaccine is estimated to become available around 2008. During initial trials, the vaccine did not exhibit any evidence in preventing HSV-2 in males.
Vaccines do not get rid of the virus though. They only try to prevent people from getting the virus if they don't already have it. There is no cure once you have the virus. And, even if a person gets the vaccine there is always a chance they can still contract the virus. Many children get the chickenpox vaccine, but some children still get chickenpox (I know I did!).

Just a quick reply to those who have a negative response about questions such as these. Don't be so quick to judge. Although this is not an answer to the actual question, I hope it provides some insight. Just because a person has been diagnosed with a STD, does not mean that they continually practice unsafe sex practices. Not everyone has the same story, however, it could have been contracted form a mate, such as a husband, or a long time partner; even with the use of a condom. Therefore, if you were to read up on this infection, you might see that although it provides more protection against STI's, even if one uses a condom, it can still be contracted through the condom, or from the areas not covered by the condom. So to throw out accusations or to suggest something that you do not have the whole story to, is totally unethical. Be realistic, a lot of people carry this, and are completely unaware because they have no symptoms, or signs. Have you been tested lately? :)

A vaccine will not cure a disease you already have. It will just help prevent someone from getting the disease. To those of you who are so quick to judge ppl who have this disease....Get yourself tested!!! 1 out of every 4 Americans has herpes. Most don't even know they have it. In most ppl, especially males, they don't have symptoms or outbreaks. This disease can sit dormant for years. If you have ever had unprotected sex then you should be tested for STD's. Every person who has this disease caught it in a different way. Just because you have herpes doesn't mean you are easy. So before you start spouting off sh*t you know nothing about....either shut up & don't answer or go get the facts. Just remember...you could have it and not even know it!

I got diagnosed with herpes type 2 about seven years ago, when I was still in college and had a stupid 1 night stand. I know a lot of girls will say this but I swear I never did that sort of thing before. I just made a mistake that one time and, suddenly, it seemed like I was going to have to live with the consequences for the rest of my life. The worst part was feeling I could never date guys again. After all, who wants to go out with a girl who has sores around her "you know what" area? But after a friend shared this video https://tr.im/rrYMq everything changed. Not only was I able to remove all traces of the herpes virus from my system in less than three weeks, but I was also able to start dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so blessed to write that just last week, in front of everyone in a crowded restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!! This program gave me back the chance to be happy, and to experience true love again. Now I want to help by sharing this with others.

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

Vaccines work by giving someone a diluted version of something, so weak that the person's immune system develops an antibody to it so they won't get it in the future.
If you already have something, it's the full blown version and too strong for your body to fight off. A vaccine won't help.

A vaccine does not cure a virus, only prevents or reduces severity of an infection. Viral infections cannot be cured.
