We try to eat very healthy, with little sugar, and lots of whole grains, and a variety of veggies. But recently my brother came to stay with us, who is used to a diet with lots of meat and bread and sugary drinks. It is getting difficult to make a meal for everyone because my brother has such different tastes as we do.
My son (2 years old) is a natural vegitarian, the only meats he eats are chicken, fish and seafood. He also loves dariy and soy poducts. He also doesn't eat many refined bread products. But will eat oatmeal, cornmeal, rice and pastas.
But my brother (6 years old) who stays here won't eat fish or seafood, or eggs and loves meat, and it is very hard to get him to eat any veggies except carrots. And wont eat any bread product unless it is white bread, or super sugary
The only thing these two seem to agree on is chicken and pasta!
Im looking to add some more varity to the foods that we eat. What are some balanced recipies that will appeal to the whole family?

➔ Vegetarian & Vegan
My cousin is a strict vegan and my husband loves his meat. Whenever, she comes over I usually make two pizzas. One with strictly veggies and the other with meat. Sometimes, I'll make tacos too and make sure I have refried beans for her to fill her taco with.

Have you given any thought to veggie burgers? Just don't tell your brother what they are he will never know the difference. With burgers you can also sneak in other veggies as toppings (tomato, onion, lettuce) just like McDonald's. Just make sure he sees you fry the patties.
There are also a lot of veggie loafs out there that mimic meat very well. Try the natural foods aile where you shop.
As for the grains he will eat you might get these into your brother easier if they are in the form of cereal. Most cold cereals today are whole grain because parents like you have demanded it (finally!)
I have found that kids also like fresh fruit, apples, oranges, pears, plumbs, etc. And nuts are a good snack food to.
good luck

Gosh, I'll bet your kitchen is like a cafe, with everyone wanting something different. At the very least, you probably have to prepare two separate entrees for each meal. You could try making casseroles with the same ingredients, except add meat for the meat lovers and leave it out for the vegetarians. There are some vegetarian cookbooks you could buy. I don't have any specific recipes here. As a last resort, take them to a restaurant and let each one order (and pay for) their own meal, except for the six-year-old brother, of course. You'll end up paying for his since his allowance probably won't cover it:)

What I have found is that meat eaters are perfectly happy to eat a vegetarian, even vegan meal as long as they do not know this.
I say that you should make pasta, and a vegetarian meal. Make a little of what your son likes, and a little of what your brother likes, and serve them to the people who like them.

Make what you normally make as long as it is healthy. The 6 y/o will learn to either eat it or starve. No kid is stupid enough to starve either. If food is provided they will eventually give in and eat it. If he doesn't like it he can eat when he goes home. My opinion is get them eating healthy when they are young and are willing. He is still young at 6 and will become willing when he gets hungry.
