I bought a jar of kimchi at the store yesterday and thought I'd make some kimchi bibimbap -- no meat. (Not that I'm a vegetarian, but cooking meat can be a pain in the *** sometimes.)

Do I heat up the kimchi before putting it in the bowl? And what veggies can I put in that I can buy at well-stocked grocery stores? I don't know any Asian markets around here.

Thanks!

Kimchi fried rice is better. Just use some sesame seed oil if available, if not use any vegetable oil, and fry kimchi and then rice with butter couple minutes later.

You need some spinich, soak it for a few hours in sesame oil first, some asian radish (called Moo), some red pepper paste (called go chu jang), an egg fried over easy, some bean sprout shoots (called kong nameul), some lettuce, and of course, some rice. You can find all of those in my local market, and it is not that big, so I think you should be able to find it in a big one too. Don't heat up the kimchi, it is eaten cold (but no one says you can't put your own flair to it either).

actually, i don't really like kimchi in mine haha! but i agree w/ the other poster, u just put the kimchi in (cold) once ur rice and all the other stuff is already in the bowl!!

carrots (chopped into long skinny pieces)
onions (sliced, cooked)
tempura (they might have it in the asian section, just heat and slice it up)
tofu if u want
spinach (well maybe next time, when ecoli is gone.. u boil water, dump in, scoop out, pour some salt on top)
imitation crab
bean sprouts (clean, and drop into boiling water for few minutes, scoop out)
fry an egg, try to keep the yoke kind of runny

tada!! :) good luck, hope it's good.

also, u kinda need gochijang....it's the red, thick, paste that is kind of spicy. also, put some sesame oil and vinegar to taste!
goood luck!
