What section of the grocery store would I find chickpeas? Are they frozen, unfrozen?

They're canned and they're often called garbanzo beans. Check the spots where they keep canned veggies or beans.

Canned--try the bean aisle (they're also called ceci--Italian name, or garbanzos--Spanish name.) Dried--check dried beans.

But...you might have to hit the ethnic food section. Try Italian or Mediterranean for cans, and try Mexican/Caribbean/Latino section for cans and dried varieties. I've never seen them frozen or fresh, just dried and canned.

Personally, I'd skip the dried ones, unless you're making a soup that calls for them. The canned ones taste pretty much the same and they're way less work. But you can't use canned ones unless you drain them--the cooking liquid is nasty and not suitable for chickpea soups or stews that use chickpea liquid.

They hide in several places...ask the store people if you just can't find them...they're like little legume fairies lurking in the shadows...

Mmmm, chickpeas!

Canned with the other beans in the canned vegetable section. They are also called garbanzo beans. It you are really ambitious you can buy them dry in bags (with the other dried beans and peas) and cook them yourself. Dried beans need to be soaked overnight and boiled for at least an hour. Use canned unless you are trying to save money.

i usually buy them from canned foods department (they're among beans) but i've seen them in world foods and some other parts of the supermarket too. it seems they keep different brands in different places.
dried ones should be where dried beans and other dried foods are.
