We just had my dad's 65th in May with about 35 people & it was a hit!! We served hot meatballs, coctail weiners, homemade chicken salad croissants, a fruit bowl with marshmallow/cream cheese dip, raw veggies & dip, cheeseball & crackers, chips, mints, mixed nuts & assorted soft drinks....Dessert was cake & ice cream and everyone brought gag gifts for fun.....It was a blast!!

I went to a party last summer and it was catered. All the food looked just beautiful and when I looked closer, I realized that every single food served was from Sam's or Costco!
I don't know if anyone else even noticed - it was presented so well and looked so great. They served meatballs in a jelly and chili sauce mix, mozzarella sticks with pizza sauce to dip, bamboo skewers with pineapple, shrimp, mango or cantalope, small sausages, croissants, lots of grapes and fruit arranged around the bottom of the other dishes. It looked like a feast. Also, the skewers were stuck into floral foam covered with silk flowers. yOu could stick them into cantalope or watermelon as well. You may want to cook all your own stuff, I just wanted to share these ideas because they seemed so easy and good, too. Maybe you can get some ideas from this.
Also there is allrecipes.com. They have a ton of family friendly recipes. :) Good luck!

I would try international finger foods.
At least 6 of them.
Moroccan lamb triangles
Spanish Patatas Bravas w/chorizo
Southern Black Eye Pea Cakes w/Red Pepper garnish
Mini Russian egg quiches w/caviar garnish (not as expensive as it sounds)
Thai Crab Cakes w/spicy chili salsa
Latin Yucca Chips with Chimichurri dip
Or an assortment of cheese (go nuts with the cracker variety if you like)
They're interesting and a good conversation starter.
Pair them with different wines (white, reds and blushes).
Have a signature drink (like a Red Devil, Mai Tai, SideCar, Manhattan something that he likes)
Then do pot luck type dishes that are crowd pleasers:
Beef Stroganoff
Lasanga (Meat/Vegetable)
Mexican Flank Steak w/Spanish Rice
Rice Pilaf
Citrus Baked Chicken w/Roasted Vegetables
Grilled Portabello Mushrooms
Cesar Salad
Crusty Bread
Make sure its not too fussy, but fun.
All of the above dishes (with the exception of the salad) can be done in advance.
Enjoy!

For that large of a crowd, a meal is easier to prep and serve than a bunch of finger food appetizers.
Maybe 2-3 pans of lasagna (depends upon pan size!)
Big green salad
Garlic Bread or bread sticks
Birthday cake (sheet cake) for dessert

Whatever he may like. Try with some finger food in the beginning. Then something easy for the main course. Good luck!

I'd get a couple buckets of KFC and have friends and family bring a covered dish.

Well it depends on what he likes and they like and maybe ethnicity also.
If you are an Indian then you might like a good mix of curries
